Throughout
his 25 year career in Toledo, Dr. Bernardo D. Martinez has
extended the frontiers of vascular surgery into the ground-breaking
field of computer-assisted surgery. A general surgery graduate
from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1975, he
trained in vascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in 1977.
During 1997/1998 he was awarded a fellowship at Stanford University
Medical Center, where he completed a year as a Senior Research & Endovascular
Associate. While at Stanford, he worked with nationally recognized
surgeons as Dr. Thomas Fogarty and Dr. Christopher Zarins. Dr.
Martinez upgraded his endoscopic surgical skills at "Stanford
Endoscopic Center for Training and Technology" under the direction
of Dr. Camran Nezhat.
In November 1998, Dr. Martinez performed his first assisted
endolaparoscopic abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. He is one
of a small number of vascular surgeons in the U.S fully trained
in endovascular surgery with special interest in endolaparoscopic
vascular surgery. By bringing his skills back to Toledo, Dr.
Martinez enables St. Vincent Medical Center (SVMMC) to be the
only hospital in Northwestern Ohio and Southeastern Michigan
to offer these leading-edge procedures.
Most recently, Dr. Martinez has accomplished several
initiatives at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center:
Creation
of The Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery Center in Toledo,
Ohio.
Creation
of an endolaparoscopic training laboratory center for residents
and fellows for educational purposes.
Educating
and training other physicians, residents, medical students
and staff about the latest technologies and techniques in minimally
invasive surgery.
Dr. Martinez
has experience with laparoscopic skills and procedures including
both training in the inanimate and animate. Subsequently, Dr.
Martinez moved into training with computer-assisted devices
including both the ZEUS Ô (Computer Motion) and da Vinci Ô (Intuitive
Surgical). Dr. Martinez successfully completed the Intuitive
Surgical da Vinci Ô Surgical System Training Workshop in
December 2002. He has received surgical credentials at St. Vincent
Mercy Medical Center to use the da-Vinci Ô system for approved
procedures.
From 1998 through 2002, Dr. Martinez
has had over two hundred and fifty (250) hours
of training in laparoscopic procedures including thirty one
(31) hours of inanimate training with computer-enhanced technology.
Twenty-two (22) of which were with the da Vinci Ô Surgical
Sysytem (1997-2002).
